My school offer is for whole class lessons. All instruments are provided. I offer both Brazilian percussion workshops using a variety of drums and Brazilian percussion instruments, and junk percussion, using a variety of household items.
Key Stage 1 (years 1-3) I can provide Basic percussion skills based on Brazilian rhythms which include counting, working together in groups, and audial skills.
Lessons can be one-off, or termly, one hour per week for a term.
Key Stage 2 (years 4-6) An introduction to Brazilian rhythms and culture. Either a one-off experience day or termly. For a whole term course of one hour per week, the class would learn percussion skills to a level where they would be able to perform at least 3 pieces of music based on Brazilian rhythms, e.g. samba, samba-reggae and funk. This would be performed in a concert setting for the school and/or parents..
Secondary Schools. As per KS2, but to a higher level of expertise
I use a range of approaches to teaching including call and response, using mnemonics to aid memorising rhythms, singing, encouraging pupils to improvise and to compose their own rhythms and preparing for performance. I routinely use the percussion repertoire to encourage pupils to explore different musical structures, styles, genres, traditions, musical elements and musical devices.
I have worked regularly with pupils from a variety of backgrounds and academic abilities including those with special needs and pupils in referral units. I have much opportunity to witness the benefits of learning percussion in boosting pupil and social development; improving learning skills; fostering team work; building life skills; improving behaviour; encouraging creativity; providing a foundation for future learning; being inclusive and having fun.
In 2024-5 I have worked in schools all over the South East of England, mainly primary schools, but also special schools. I have consistently received positive feedback, such as the following: ‘We had the most wonderful feedback for you on this workshops. They commented on your geuine rapport with the SEN and SEMH children and how confident they were. They loved having you visit and are looking to rebook with us!’. Specific references can be provided on request.
I can also provide tuition for after-school clubs.
I undertake annual safeguarding training.
I have up to date DBS
